EXPLORING THE NORTHERN FLINDERS RANGES.
To reach the northern Flinders Ranges from the west or south, travel to Port Augusta 300km
north of Adelaide. Just south of the city is a turn-off to Quorn via Stirling North. Take
this road and continue to Quorn. Along the road, to the north, you will see the railway
line for the Pitchi Richi Tourist Railway 'Afghan Express', a steam train which runs between
Quorn and Port Augusta on Saturdays between April and November.
There is an historic mill and an agricultural museum in this attractive small town which also
offers a range of accommodation and general services.
Take the road north to Warren and Buckeringa Gorges then head east to rejoin the B83 (Marree Rd)
at Death Rock and continue north to Hawker stopping at the Camels Hump and Castle Hill Lookouts
and the Yourambulla Caves.
Hawker is the southern entrance to the ranges and is surrounded with attractions to visit. As a touring
centre it is in close proximity to most of the major attractions of the area and has an airstrip, hotel/motel,
caravan park, holiday units, general shopping services, a hospital and an historic pub.
There is an accredited information centre and a 30 metre art panorama of the Wilpena Pound at the
Jeff Morgan Gallery.
After visiting the attractions around Hawker continue north to Leigh Creek and Copley and turn east to the
Gammon Ranges National Park and visit the gorges, caves and the hot springs. There are plenty of
walk trails and camping spots and you should spend a couple of days before returning south from
the junction near the Balcanoona Park Ranger's office 40km to the turn-off to Blinman and return
through the park to Hawker.
The Heysen Trail runs through much of the park and you can join this renowned walking trail between
Parachilna Gorge and Quorn at Wilpena Pound, Hawker or many other places along the way.
