Exploring the Yorke Peninsula.
The Yorke Peninsula is only a little over an hour north of Adelaide and offers a diversity and
ambience which reflects the west of the state. Beaches, seaside villages, marine and national parks and
a proximity to the magnificent Flinders Ranges.
Take the highway north from Gepps Cross through Virginia and Two Wells to Port Wakefield, a seaside town at the
head of Gulf St Vincent, and the gateway to the peninsula. There are service facilities here including
'Possum' Kipling's Bakery, named for the celebrity driver of the famed REDEX around Australia endurance trials
of the 1950s. Older travellers will easily identify with the name.
Just north of Port Wakefield the highway forks with the right fork leading to Port Augusta, Alice Springs
and Perth and the left fork onto the top of the Peninsula.
Accommodation will be found all over the peninsula and a list of places to stay will be found from the
menu opposits.
I suggest you turn left at Federation Park towards Ardrossan and follow the coast south to Edithburgh or
Yorketown, you can stay anywhere in the south or what is locally called 'The Bottom End' and explore the
attractions in this area. The next day head north after visiting Marion Bay and the Innis National Park on
the west coast, and stay at Wallaroo, Moonta or Kadina and look around
the mining ruins and seaside towns of the Copper Triangle.
If you are heading west you can catch the ferry at Wallaroo which will take you to Lucky Bay near Cowell
on the Eyre Peninsula, eliminating some 400km of driving around the top of Spencer Gulf.
I suggest you spend at least 2 nights on the Yorke Peninsula to explore most of the things on offer, and remember, it
is a place many visitors from Adelaide spend a week or two every year to relax and regenerate. If you are looking for a similar
resting place in your travels, the Yorke Peninsula will probably be the ideal spot.
